What is therapy, and how does it work?
Therapy is a collaborative process where you work with a trained mental health professional to explore your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and life experiences. The goal is to support emotional well-being, personal growth, and meaningful change. Sessions typically involve talking through challenges, learning new coping skills, and gaining deeper insight into yourself.
How do I know if I need therapy?
You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. People seek therapy for many reasons, including anxiety, depression, relationship issues, trauma, grief, life transitions, stress, or simply wanting to better understand themselves. If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or curious about personal growth, therapy can help.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is about getting to know you. Your therapist will ask questions about your background, current concerns, and what you hope to gain from therapy. It’s also a chance for you to ask questions, get a feel for the therapist’s style, and begin building a sense of trust and safety.
How long does therapy last?
Therapy length varies based on your goals and needs. Some people benefit from short-term support (a few months), while others choose longer-term work. You and your therapist will regularly check in to discuss progress and adjust the plan as needed.
How often will I meet with my therapist?
Most people begin with weekly sessions, which may change depending on your availability, needs, and preferences. Together, you’ll decide what schedule works best.
Is everything I say in therapy confidential?
Yes, your privacy is a top priority. Information shared in therapy is confidential, with a few legal exceptions related to safety (such as threats of harm to yourself or others). Your therapist will explain these limits during your first session.
What if I don’t feel comfortable with my therapist?
Therapy works best when there’s a good fit between you and your therapist. If you don’t feel comfortable, it’s okay to speak up or explore working with someone else. Your comfort and trust are essential to the healing process.
Can therapy really help me?
Yes—many people find therapy life-changing. It offers a space to feel heard, supported, and empowered. While therapy isn’t a quick fix, it can lead to deep insight, emotional relief, and long-term growth.
